Plants in pots

Upcycling Tips for your gardening

  • Use Yoghurt pots as an ideal place for sowing seedlings.
  • Try tying aluminium lids to rope above your vegetable beds. They will move in the wind and scare away birds looking for food.
  • You can reuse bought plant pots time and time again for more plants.

Keep in mind...

Garden tools allow you to work efficiently, tend to your plants and cultivate your soil. Just make sure you have sustainability in mind when choosing which ones to buy. Here are some important factors to consider:

Durability

1. Durability

Ideally, you should buy tools like shears with long guarantees that have passed extensive hardness and precision testing so that you can rely on them for many years of everyday gardening.

Repairs and replacements

2. Repairs and replacements

Check that those durable tools can be repaired or have parts replaced so that you can carry on using them years down the line.

Economy-and-efficiency

3. Economy and efficiency

Using drip irrigation systems near the roots, soil sensors and automated controls can help you to save water and avoid wasting precious resources.

4. Materials

Pick tools made from recycled materials or with handles made from certified wood from sustainably managed forests.

5. Battery tools for more power

A single battery system for several cross-brand devices and gardening tasks means that accumulations of non-compatible batteries, chargers and cables are a thing of the past. This will save money, space and resources.

Something old, something new

Some gardening tools are already made from recycled materials. They have to be able to withstand years of demanding use in everyday gardening with functionality and quality perfectly on a par with tools made from new plastic. The majority of recycled plastic is made from household waste, such as film and packaging.

There are several steps on the journey from yoghurt pot to garden shears:

  1. First, the waste is sorted by type of plastic and pressed into bales of each type. This process is so much more productive if people sort their waste at home.
  2.  After another sorting stage, the bales are cleaned and shredded.
  3. The shredded plastic is then dried and compressed to form a granular material ready for further processing. But it’s not just plastic that can be recycled – metal can be reused in garden tools too.
